rugs: wild kingdom
the wild kingdom collection rugs from london-based designers edward barber and jay osgerby for the rug company make me smile and are perfect for kids’ rooms [or the kids at heart]. i absolutely love the big, graphic animals on great background colors. and these rugs are hand-knotted tibetian wool [which means they will stand up over time if cared for]. my favorite is the butterflies, especially with the vivid orange background and complementary blue butterflies. these rugs are the best!

gray pants

these scrap chairs from gray pants have been on my favorites list for a couple of years. i just love how strong and whimsical they are. plus they are eco-friendly because they are made of cardboard, newspaper and plywood scraps. and while i don’t think they are even available for sale yet (so they actually qualify as prototype art) … they do have equally impressive scrap lights (made from cardboard – who would have thought?). if only i had room.

art: jim denevan
i just love things that surprise me. and those that make me say wow. jim denevan’s work is both. and it could be that he has his hands in some really cool things. or it could be i was supposed to find this artist (i prefer to believe it was the latter – more on that later). i frst read about denevan’s sand and earth art earlier this month. he is based up in san jose and makes these HUGE drawings on sand and earth that are eventually erased by waves and weather.
his art is bold. and while the circles in this pictures make it kind of whimsical the sheer size and precision of the project can put you in a trance. i keep staring at his art and thinking…how. and then i think wow. at any rate…i continue poking around his website only to see he has a tab called food. and i click on it to find that he is the creator of outstanding in the field. which is this really fun travelling dinner program that i found last week. yeah i had no idea.

outstanding in the field partners with farms from around the country to provide a five-course, locally grown dinner for around 150 people each time. and before dinner you get a tour of the farm so you can see all the workings. i think this could be such a fun date and a great way to get to know and support local farms. fun!

art: nnamdi okonkwo
nnamdi okonkwo realized his gift of sculpture as a child in eastern nigeria. after moving to the united states to play basketball in university he has continued his art – through sculpture and drawings. his sculptures vary from the miniature – six inches – to the monumental – displayed in plazas, etc. the miniature sculptures particularly intrigue me because as six feet nine inches his hands must be large but he still creates these fantastic small sculptures.

the sculpture above – love – is one of my favorites. the simplicity of the sculpture allows the viewer to really take in the sculpture without distraction. to be honest the first time i saw this sculpture and had not researched the artist i thought the sculptor was a woman because of the emotion i felt from the mother. but nnamdi’s admiration of a woman’s characteristics gives him the ability to put a woman’s emotions in his sculptures. i adore his work and really need to find where i can see these wonderful creations in person.

boo michelle photography
so this post is slightly biased. i am putting the disclaimer up front that i am related to this lovely lady. but i don’t think i am overstating the fact though that she knows how to shoot. photographs that is. half of my living room photos are from her collection. literally. she started shooting while in high school and has not stopped. she loves to work with people but still takes amazing food and scenic shots.

i love her work for its honesty. the images are true for what they are. i feel like i am on the beach looking at the boy or that i could eat the chocolates or feel the breeze and crisp in the air. her work is wonderful. be inspired by boo michelle photography.

art: fatali
we found the fatali art gallery while wondering around downtown park city in february. and i can’t get over how impressive his work and gallery were. the photos so saturated with color it seems that any more saturation and the color would be spilling onto the floor. the online images definitely don’t do the photographs justice. not to mention his framing and lighting in the gallery make the pictures even more impressive. which just makes you think that if you are going to purchase a print you better purchase lighting to go with it.
