anchor andirons

even though it is a blazing 80 degrees outside and no time for a fire [only a bonfire at night may be acceptable]…i wanted to share these super anchor andirons from lyle + umbach. these would be such a statement in a fireplace instead of the average andirons that can be so boring when a fire isn’t burning. so even though it hot outside at least these andirons are anchors which implies the cool of the ocean :)

kitchen: diane keaton

diane keaton is by far one of my favorite actresses. not only are her films great but she always has the best clothes in them [because i said so] and the homes are always fabulous [something's gotta give]. so it’s no surprise that her home is also wonderful. it was featured in AD a couple years ago and i still can’t get it out of my mind.

my favorite part is her kitchen. the simplicity of the space [white counters and cabinets + no chotchkies] is complimented by bold and oversized pieces [cacti + shades + pottery]. i absolutely adore the hanging lamp covers. how fun to have them upside down and the stitching just adds a great detail to tie the cabinet knobs and hanging mechanism together. the cacti on the counter are so surprising. no one expects to see cacti on a kitchen counter which makes the space even more entrancing. i just love this space. and while this obviously would not work in a super small kitchen like mine…it definitely works here because of the tall ceilings and large counter space…and i am in love.

picture fence

i really want this frame assemblage behind my couch now. i love how the beach fencing ties all the pictures together and how easy it would be to change out the photos (instead of having to take the backs of frames out). plus i love how many photos you can put on the fence and it doesn’t look out of proportion like it would if there were a gazillion small frames on the wall. if i didn’t love my own living room wall as much i think i would be doing this project today. and seriously…think how cost effective this project would be!

not your typical fruit bowl

since it is friday i thought i would show a fun little piece and this fruit holder from design + home makes my day. not only would the fruit look so enticing in the kitchen but just think what a wonderful centerpiece this would make – especially in the summer or for brunch or even for a buffet. my mind is just swirling with all the types of fruit it could hold and how you could put apples, orange, pears, lemons – and make different designs and patterns in the holders. i think this is definitely the next investment for my entertaining arsenal (i just have to find room – haha).

king of the showers

now obviously this type of shower would take some advance planning to install. and i don’t think the local home depot is going to be offering weekend installation classes any time soon. but this shower takes the cake for beauty.

philippe starck designed these dramatic showers for axor – the designer brand of hansgrohe. i love the clean lines of this shower and how the water jets out of the ceiling instead of the wall. just imagine being surrounded by water (don’t worry the stream has three levels)…honestly i think this is the sexiest shower ever. and while looking at the shower you would start thinking it would only belong in a modern bathroom…i would want to install the shower in every traditional, transitional and modern home i could. this shower is pure drama.

gray pants

these scrap chairs from gray pants have been on my favorites list for a couple of years. i just love how strong and whimsical they are. plus they are eco-friendly because they are made of cardboard, newspaper and plywood scraps. and while i don’t think they are even available for sale yet (so they actually qualify as prototype art) … they do have equally impressive scrap lights (made from cardboard – who would have thought?). if only i had room.

fire farm lighting

while this doesn’t completely count as a home post i still wanted to share it. i have always thought hotel conference room ceilings could use a make over. they are usually those cold, boring ceiling tiles and they always makes me think that if the room is to hold anything besides a business conference it would require a momentous amount of decoration to distract from it. but fire farm lighting created some really super lights for this super conference room.

these lights are fantastic because they make conferences more interesting and wedding receptions more romantic. they can transform from a bright conference to an intimate wedding celebration and everything between. my favorite part is that when they are transitioned to down-spots they create a moonlit night atmosphere. i just love this space.

register covers.

in case you are thinking that i am referring to something that has to do with checkbooks or retail sales or a plethora of other things. let me clarify. register covers for this post are those metal things that cover your air conditioning/heating vents. typically speaking they are just unattractive, metal, slotted plates. some people paint them the color of the wall. some people let them accumulate lots of dust. but i am of the opinion that they can be attractive and make your walls and ceilings look pretty darn classy.
Andover Register Covers - Door & Wall - Hardware
the register cover above is from restoration hardware. i love this because it is metal and therefore can be installed in either a floor or wall. the design is classic and ornate to add just a little dash to your ductwork.
Style H Wood Air Register
i also love the custom wood registers from pattern cut. on a side note – these guys did a great job for a project that i was working on…they are friendly, fast, and very helpful. wood registers are really only safe for walls and ceilings (sorry if you have ones on the floor) but they are wonderful because they can be completely customized. you make the design and you can have it on your registers. and then the wood is easily painted or stained to match or stand out on your walls and ceilings. some may think that registers are the least of your worries when decorating. and while it probably wouldn’t be first on my must-have design list i think it’s important to remember that every little detail can really make a room feel wonderful or lacking. and therefore registers are important.
ps. maybe one day i will do a piece on point-of-sale register covers. you never know. :)

conversation wall

i saw this wall in a wonderful magazine and was smitten. at first i thought the wall just had squiggly lines drawn through it. but wait. it actually is a map of beirut carved into the gypsum wall. you typically see maps framed on walls but this is so unique. i think this is such a wonderful conversation piece in the foyer of their home and such a surprise to know that it is really a map on the wall. this makes me happy.

topnotch tenting

i think any child who grows up with this playroom from alessandra branca would turn out to be a superb adult. i mean who wouldn’t be sophisticated, classy and classic after playing in this room. the tenting of the room just gives it a playhouse feel. and the red cording and accents are so fun and lively. the tented ceiling is so playful and is such a refreshing change from your typical plastered ceiling. oh to be a kid again.

and i don’t think playrooms are the only rooms that could be tented. think about the amazing dressing rooms, sitting rooms and bedrooms that can be created with a beautiful tented ceiling.
